Molecular and morphological phylogeny of flat-footed flies (Diptera: Opetiidae and Platypezidae)

The project is focused on resolving intrafamilial and generic phylogenetic relationship within families Opetiidae and Platypezidae. Opetiidae are considered to be sister group of Platypezidae (citace), but some authors presented different hypothesis (citace). The project is supported by the Grant Agency of Charles University (GAUK) and realized with cooperation of Gunnila Stahls (Finnish Museum), Jaromír Vaňhara and Andrea Tóthová (Masaryk University, Brno, CZ) and Peter J. Chandler (Melksahm, UK)
Subtopics:
  • Position of Opetiidae and Platypezidae in Platypezoidea

  • Position of monogeneric subfamily Microsaniinae

  • Monophyly of Platypezidae and its synapomorphies

Identity of second Stratiomyidae (Diptera) of Socotra Island

Together with Rudolf Rozkošný (Masaryk University, Brno, CZ) we are trying to indentify a newly found species from Socotra Island. It is a member of genus Oplodontha, widely distributed not only in Socotra Island, but from Egypt, through United Arab Emirates to Eastern and South India. Upon revision of the types of Oplodontha oasina, O. minuta and O. pulchriceps, it is probable that all this names are in fact synonyms and it is the species O. minuta.
